Herts Tourism Awards 2019 winners announced

Luxury Watford hotel The Grove wins accommodation award for the third year running at the Herts Tourism Awards

The winners have been announced for the 2019 Herts Tourism Awards this week with The Grove Hotel taking home the coveted ‘Large Hotel of the Year’ award for the third year running. All the nominees and winners for the Hertfordshire tourism industry awards attended the ceremony at Hotel Cromwell in Stevenage on Thursday 5th December where a whole host of businesses from across the county celebrated a fantastic year of tourism.

Eight other Hertfordshire businesses were also awarded prizes at the ceremony in a range of different categories. The other winners in the ‘Accommodation’ categories included Hatfield’s Lawn House Hotel, which took the prize for “Small Accommodation Provider of the Year” and the “Camping, Glamping, Holiday Park and Self-Catering Accommodation of the Year” was won by Home Farm Glamping in Elstree.  The “Large Visitor Attraction of the Year” was won by popular Leavesden attraction Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter and the “Small Visitor Attraction” went to Leavesden Country Park in Abbots Langley.  The “Taste of Hertfordshire of the Year” went to St Alban’s restaurant Lussmanns Sustainable Fish and Grill and Shepreth Wildlife Park took home “Experience of the Year.” The final two awards went to Sopwell House in St. Albans as the “Business Events Venue of the Year” whilst “Pub of the Year” went to Hertford-based The Old Cross Tavern.

In addition, Hertfordshire family attraction Ventura Wildlife Park also picked up a special award recognising their on-going charity work with the Family Holiday Association. The award was presented by John Kinnear from the Family Holiday Association, who commented “We are thrilled to work with so many Hertfordshire attractions who have generously given us so many tickets over the years to help us offer family days out to struggling families having a tough time. This award really recognises that the Ventura Wildlife Park have gone above and beyond this year, donating tickets throughout the entire year and helping us to deliver family days out to people that really need them.”

Around 80 tourism industry invitees attended the awards ceremony on December 5th 2019. Guests were served sparkling wine and a selection of deliciously seasonal mulled wine and mince pies.

The awards were devised and launched in 2017 by destination specialists Go To Places - who deliver Visit Herts- to reward exceptional standards of customer service and outstanding visitor experiences within the local tourism industry. Following an initial round of judging by an expert panel of independent tourism judges, the shortlisted finalists were decided by mystery shopping visits. Winners will automatically go through to compete in Visit England’s National Awards for Excellence.

Deirdre Wells OBE, CEO of Go To Places, said: “We’re thrilled to celebrate and honour Herts’ wonderful tourism businesses at the Herts Tourism Awards. From first-rate accommodation providers to exceptional visitor attractions, this year’s winners really demonstrate the quality and diversity of Hertfordshire’s current tourism offering. Delivering extraordinary experiences, delicious food and drink and a world-class warm welcome, these businesses continue to grow the visitor economy in Herts and we’re very proud to take a moment to celebrate their achievements. Congratulations to all the 2019 winners and nominees!”

The awards were sponsored by Rubber Cheese, web design and development agency that creates bespoke systems, engaging websites and digital apps.
